I made this four-CD mix in 2003.  I had been a fan of Acid Jazz since 1993, but by the late 1990’s, that style of music had sort of died out/went out of fashion.  In the early 2000’s, though, I started getting into the newly emerging style of music called Broken Beat/Nu Jazz, which felt to me like an off shoot of Acid Jazz and House music.

The inspiration for “A Love Supreme” came from the fact that I had all of this stuff on records, but couldn’t listen to them in my car.  I didn’t have any of these songs on CD, and I had way too many to try and cram them all onto one 80-minute CD.

Once I came up with the ‘Love Supreme’ concept, I realized that I could do four separate 80 minute mixes, use all of the records that I had, let the songs play out in their entirety, etc.  The soft plastic CD cases that I found could hold four CD’s, so I was able to get creative with the overall packaging (sort of like a mini box set), tweak the Impulse Records label for the CD label sticker art, etc.

At the beginning and end of each CD, I included the corresponding music from each part of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” in an attempt to tie everything together and make a connection between the old and new.  The music on all four of the mixes is mostly House and Broken Beat/Nu Jazz, but near the end of Part 4, I also include a Breakbeat and a Drum & Bass song that fit the vibe.

In 2004, I did a follow up mix CD called “Fresh”, with the same type of Broken Beat/Nu Jazz, House, and Drum & Bass that’s on “A Love Supreme”.  To hear this mix, check out my “Fresh” post!
