Around 1996-1997, I got hip to the game about buying records online.  I began using Sandbox Automatic and HipHopSite.com for a lot of the new records/CD’s, and eBay for a lot of the old records.  I finally had access to all of the old school rap and electro records that I didn’t own back in the day.  In retrospect, eBay really helped me get my weight up for my gig at Saint Andrew’s Hall (see my “Old School Hip Hop” post for more information about my residency there).

So between the years that I made “Old School Hip Hop” (1996) and “Electro Kingdom” (2000), I had been collecting a lot of classics that weren’t originally included in my “Old School Hip Hop” mixtape.  And since I was playing them at Saint Andrew’s Hall (1999-2000), a few of the pop-lockers started telling me, “Yeah, I liked your Old School Hip Hop tape, but you didn’t have enough Electro on it.  You only played a little bit of it at the end.  You need to make me an Electro tape with all the stuff that you play every week!!”  They slowly wore me down and made me realize that I needed to supplement my “Old School Hip Hop” mixtape with a new one that focused on the 120BPM+ songs that weren’t on it.

Back when I recorded “Electro Kingdom”, I had my day job, the Starving Artists Crew, Saint Andrew’s Hall, and all of my other side DJ gigs.  I was a busy guy and didn’t have time to dedicate 2-3 months solely towards making yet another complex, tracked mix.  Ultimately, I decided to record “Electro Kingdom” live, straight to cassette tape, one take per side.

“Electro Kingdom”, reviewed in Elemental magazine:

It should go without saying, but there just wasn’t enough room to include all of the songs that I remembered hearing back in the day, and there were still way too many songs that I didn’t own even when I recorded “Electro Kingdom”…  so I will try to make up for some the missing songs right now:
