OK, so my girl has been buggin’ me for months to make her a Drum & Bass mix. Her only demands were that I needed to put Sade and Azealia Banks in there somewhere, and that I needed to take my time on this mix and do it properly. Over the course of making it, more requests came in from friends, etc., and I tried my best to accommodate.
When I DJ live, I tend to have the patience and attention span of a 6 year old boy with ADHD. I never let anything play longer than two or three minutes (i.e., before bringing in the next song). So needless to say, it was actually killing me to let the songs in “4RLA1” breathe a little and stretch out.
Also, I decided to use the same “foreshadowing” technique that I did in “Techno City“, but took things one step further. (“Foreshadowing” is a multi-tracked mix technique where you take elements from the next song that you’re about to play…and loop them underneath the song that you are currently playing. When the next song finally comes in and the old song completely drops out, your ears/brain will already have become familiar with the new song. This helps blur the line between when one song starts and another begins, and makes transitions more seamless). In “4RLA1”, not only did I use “foreshadowing”, but I also added a layer of drums underneath 80% of the songs. Most of them just didn’t have enough oomph because of how they were originally mixed down and compressed. So, depending on what was lacking in the original song (e.g., snares, hi-hats, bass kicks, etc.), I would take a 10~20 second section of open drums from an entirely different song and loop it underneath. This resulted in the main songs of “4RLA1” ending up with a fuller sound.
Although “4RLA1” is not my best mix, I would have to argue that it’s by far the most sophisticated mix that I have made to date!
